Learn to Teach in Classroom and Clinical Settings
Are you a nurse who is passionate about teaching and learning? Do you love to impart knowledge to your colleagues and help improve patient care through your love of learning? Do you want to develop marketable skills that can increase your nursing career opportunities?
Saint Xavier’s innovative online Nurse Educator post-master's certificate program provides MSN graduates with the opportunity to work toward becoming a Certified Nurse Educator through experiential learning as well as rigorous classroom practice. Adding this component to your nursing resume can offer you greater career flexibility and the chance to pass on your hard-won knowledge to future generations of nurses.
What You Will Learn
The Nurse Educator certificate program covers teaching techniques specific to the nursing context and how to adapt them to different settings—such as public health classes, hospitals, and schools of nursing. You’ll hone your teaching skills by preparing, presenting and evaluating actual classes during a guided practicum, giving you valuable hands-on experience. The curriculum also covers topics including:
- Educational theory for adult learners
- Curriculum design
- Curriculum evaluation
- Lesson planning
- How to create course objectives
- Student evaluation techniques
In the past, many nurses wishing to enter the field of nurse education had to learn teaching techniques on the job. SXU’s online Nurse Educator program provides you with a mix of classroom learning and hands-on experience to give you the skills and knowledge you need to be an effective instructor from day one. The clinical practicum portion of the Nurse Educator program gives students the opportunity to apply classroom theories in real-world settings to graduate with the confidence to take on (and succeed in) the nurse educator role.
Become a Certified Nurse Educator
The online Nurse Educator certificate program is a valuable opportunity for nurses who have a master’s degree in nursing or are currently earning one in SXU’s online MSN program. Nurse practitioners, nurse administrators, and clinical specialists who want to impart their knowledge and expertise will find the program an excellent fit.
The nine semester hour program can be started immediately following the completion of your MSN studies, or if you already hold an MSN, you can complete it as a stand-alone program. And because the Nurse Educator certificate curriculum is available 100 percent online, you can earn your certificate whenver and wherever it is most convenient for you. If you're a practicing nurse, this means you can embark on a path of professional development without putting your nursing career on hold to go back to school.
Upon completion of the Nurse Educator certificate program, students are eligible to sit for the Certified Nurse Educator exam. Passing the exam grants nurses the designation of Certified Nurse Educator (CNE), which brings more job opportunities, greater earning potential, and the ability to influence the next generation of nurses.
As a CNE, you will have the skills and knowledge to meet the diverse needs of learners in various positions, including:
- Nursing school faculty member
- Continuing nurse education specialist
- Clinical nurse supervisor
- Nursing staff development officer
- Community health educator
In addition to the opportunities for nurse educators in traditional settings like hospitals and clinical nurse training facilities, the demand for nurse educators is expected to grow among companies that release new medical devices as the need to train people how to use them becomes more prevalent. This position is sometimes referred to as a medical device educator or RN medical device educator.
Accredited Nursing Program
In 2013 the National League for Nursing (NLN) re-designated the School of Nursing as a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education, currently one of only 40 schools in the U.S. to receive this distinction. In addition, Saint Xavier’s school of nursing is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)1. These distinctions help give you the confidence in the professional nursing development you will experience as a student at Saint Xavier University, and they will demonstrate the full value of your certificate to employers, peers, and patients.
Other features of the online Nurse Educator certificate program at Saint Xavier University include a highly selective admissions process, an online format to help you balance your study and work schedule, and a diverse student body.
